About the course

This is a Professional course delivered by University of Cambridge Advance Online. Advanced professional development courses are designed for mid-career and senior professionals seeking deeper expertise and practical and usually specific/specialised capability building. Courses combine academic rigour, tutor support, applied assignments and peer learning to help learners progress into specialist or leadership roles.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer just a technical capability; it is a system-level design and decision-making challenge that impacts people, organisations and society as a whole.

This eight-week course moves beyond theory to bridge the gap between AI capabilities and human behaviour to develop your ability to design, evaluate and govern human–AI systems in practice.

You’ll learn the fundamentals of human–computer interaction (HCI), exploring how systems interact with human behaviour, how automation decisions are made, and how risk, control and agency shape outcomes.

Each module provides a practical piece of the puzzle, guiding you step by step to create a fully functional design report tailored to your own goals and industry.

With guidance from University of Cambridge experts, you’ll master techniques like function modelling to analyse and deconstruct interactive systems. You’ll also gain practical strategies for managing risk, governance, verification and validation. By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped to create robust and successful human-in-the-loop (HITL) AI systems.

This course is ideal for professionals in senior or managerial roles across a range of sectors. It combines hands-on practical learning with a series of case-based exercises. You’ll gain highly sought-after skills and learn to design powerful systems aligned with your organisation’s goals.
